HOBART STAGE COMBAT WEEKENDER

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August 2022

We’re thrilled to be heading to Hobart for an action-packed weekend of stage combat training with Fight Director Lyndall Grant.

WHAT IS IT?

This workshop is your opportunity to throw yourself right into a range of dramatic combat for stage, screen and motion capture.

For the first time, Captivate is heading to Tassie! We’ve created a workshop that will let you train across a variety of stage combat weapons, techniques and genres, and will give you a chance to get your teeth stuck into how to best perform the action.

Dramatic combat is one of the most exciting areas of performance, however it’s also one of the most challenging. Scenes that portray violence and danger can carry a real risk to the performers and those around them, especially when played night after night or take after take. In the middle of high-energy and high-emotion scenes there is technical precision, choreography, weapon handling, blocking and illusion to juggle, all while maintaining character and story. The craft is in learning how to perform these scenes safely, reliably and in a way that enthrals the audience.

Over two days, we will be exploring the fundamental techniques of stage combat with swords, knives and unarmed fighting. We will romp through safety, illusions, falls and tumbles, acting technique, historical context, form – everything you need to approach the work with confidence and grounding. At the same time, Lyndall will guide you through you need to successfully approach this work in the industry, and how to bring out your best performance.

By the end of the weekend, you will come away with a raft of new skills, training techniques and knowledge – all which widen your casting options and your ability to do the work well when you are cast. But aside from that, it’s just an incredibly fun weekend with a group of like-minded people… who won’t say ‘no’ to a bit of swinging swords!
